Screw Plug Heater
Generally, the screw plug heater consists of hairpin tubular elements that are either welded or brazed into a pipe thread fitting, which is then screwed directly through a threaded opening or coupling in a tank wall or pipe. Whether your heating need includes water, vegetable oil, detergents, plating chemicals, petroleum products, grease, or gas, the screw plug heater from Heatrex is designed for rapid heat transfer and quick heat up durations. However, this does not mean that the screw plug heater takes up a lot of energy. On the contrary, it will interest you to note that all immersion heaters are among the most efficient in their category, because heat is generated only via direct contact with the liquid or gas being heated. If your project demands great accuracy in regards to target temperatures, then you can use the screw plug heater with a digital controller or orient it with additional thermowells. Screw plug immersion heaters are most often used in Chemical, Petrochemical and Refining, Oil & Gas, and Food and Beverage applications. Examples include clean water, paraffin, glycol, hydraulic crude, oil, asphalt, caustic solutions, and chemical baths.
For the screw plug, the standard National Pipe Thread (NPT) fitting sizes are 1”, 1 ¼”, 1 ½”, 2”, 2 ½”. However, you should be aware of other thread types and pipe thread sizes such as the British standard pipe, which can be provided upon request. The most common sheath materials for screw plug heaters are copper, incoloy, and steel. You should understand the types of elements and temperatures each sheath operates best in.
- You should use copper sheathed screw plug heaters only for processing water that has minimal chemical solutions such as deionized or demineralized water. The sheath can hold temperatures of up to 177°C.
- For incoloy sheathed screw plug heaters, you should use for processing weak chemical solutions such as caustic soda, tar, detergents, etc. The sheath can hold temperatures of up to 871°C.
- You should use steel sheaths for fluid heat transfer in high to low viscosity petroleum products, tar, wax, paraffin, and degreasing solvents. The sheath can hold temperatures of up to 399°C.
